Discover the Charm of Punta Mujeres
Tucked away on Lanzarote’s quieter northeast coast, Punta Mujeres is a hidden gem where time seems to slow down. Around 30 kilometres from Lanzarote's capital, Arrecife, this coastal village is best known for its natural swimming pools formed by volcanic rock, perfect for a calm swim in clear Atlantic waters.
Punta Mujeres keeps things simple and beautiful. Think traditional whitewashed cottages, vivid blue shutters, and narrow winding streets that present a view of Lanzarote's past, untouched by mass commercialism. It’s where you can sip coffee at a the beachside tapas bar, browse a local shop, or watch the tide roll in, often with barely another tourist in sight.
Just up the road, you’ll find some of Lanzarote’s most remarkable volcanic landmarks. Jameos del Agua, shaped by the island’s famous artist César Manrique, blends art and nature inside a lava tube complex of pools, gardens, and an atmospheric concert space. Nearby, Cueva de los Verdes offers a fascinating walk through ancient volcanic tunnels, lit to reveal their incredible textures and colours.
If you’re feeling active, this stretch of coast is a dream for walkers and cyclists, with quiet trails and dramatic views. The rugged terrain also makes for excellent snorkelling and diving, especially in the peaceful coves beyond the village.
Food here is all about freshness. Traditional restaurants serve up catch-of-the-day seafood – grilled fish, octopus, and classic tapas – all best enjoyed with a glass of Lanzarote’s volcanic wine.
Unspoilt and effortlessly charming, Punta Mujeres is perfect for travellers after something slower, quieter, and more authentic. Whether you're here to unwind or explore, it’s a place that stays with you long after you’ve left.
Arrieta, the locals' favourite ‘holiday’ location
The village of Arrieta sits adjacent to Punta Mujeres. Both are in the municipality of Haría, widely considered the island’s most traditional region. With just around 1,000 residents, Arrieta offers a relaxed, authentic feel that’s hard to come by elsewhere. It’s an ideal choice for those looking to unwind – whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple, or with family.
Despite its quiet nature, Arrieta has gently embraced a touch of tourism without losing its charm. Much like Punta Mujeres, Arrieta paints a picture of a Lanzarote from decades past.
One of Arrieta’s standout features is Playa de La Garita, a golden sandy beach stretching over 800 metres. Its calm, swimmable waters make it perfect for a laid-back day by the sea, whether paddling with the kids, catching your first waves, or simply soaking up the sun. The beach is well-equipped with a play area, showers, toilets, and a beachside mojito bar much loved by locals and visitors alike. Food in Arrieta is a delight, with a handful of restaurants serving fresh, locally caught seafood and traditional Canarian dishes.
Arrieta is a perfect escape for those wanting a slower pace, a taste of local life, and time by the sea without the bustle of mass tourism.
